Pretty Portraits on a Quiet Monday

Saturday Night Live has been quite a large part of my weekends for the past few years. Whenever I don’t have something going on on a Saturday night, I will watch SNL and craft. I really love it.

Anyways I was always really drawn to the vivid, highly stylized portraits of the host and the band for each particular night, that are shown just before commercials – so a while back I did some research and found out that the photographer behind those photos is a woman named Mary Ellen Matthews.

She is definitely one of my favourite photographers. I love that you can spot one of her photos and immediately know that she took it. I find that so admirable that artists have such a unique style that there is no mistaking their work – it is a characteristic common between many of my favourite artists.  I wanted to share some of her rad photos with you.

its a good thing.

Its a good thing that I don’t really get embarrassed because otherwise I might not ever leave my house, I just always seem to find myself in situations that could (should) probably embarrass me. Take yesterday for instance, I was walking on campus in between classes and was sooo excited because while I was in class it had started snowing (eeee!).

So this was about 10:30 in the morning and I was having a good self-esteem day, I showered in the morning, and didn’t just throw on the first thing I found.  I am walking from one side of campus where my class was, to the other side of campus where I had some work to do when I approach possibly one of the busiest intersections on campus. A car just went through the stop sign the other one was pulling up to the stop sign so there was time for me to go. I look around to make sure nothing was coming through, casually notice the throngs of people walking around in between classes and step onto the crosswalk.

To my surprise I find myself slipping. My arms go out to try to balance myself and my feet are slipping trying to find a grip on the ground to steady myself. Finally I find what I think is a gripping point on the ground only to put my other foot down and slip again. By this point I am so off balance that there is no hope for me. I try to save myself, but to no avail and before I know it my feet are straight out in front of me, my arms are still in the air from trying to balance myself and I am falling towards the ground. The rest is a bit of a blur, but I remember on the ground thinking how I hate when people fall and then immediately look around to see who saw so when I got up I did not look around. I just held my head high, and carried on my merry way.  I bet I looked something like the guy with the umbrella at the end of this video, but with much more struggling to regain my balance.

This would happen to me because one of my greatest joys in winter is watching people slip on ice. I never wish anyone to get hurt, and I hope they don’t get embarrassed but I just love when people slip, it kills me. So I’m glad I could be that source of  joy and laughter to the masses in between class at UWO yesterday. ha.

Anyways, that is my story, I could have been embarrassed but I wasn’t. Instead I just laughed to myself at the irony that I would find myself on the cold ground. When I told my friend Siobhan she laughed and said she wished my books went flying everywhere. Yeah, I have kind friends. lol

I hope you are all getting into the Christmas spirit or the finals spirit if you are a student lol. I am definitely getting into the Christmas spirit, but having a bit more difficulty with the finals spirit. lol

If you havent, you should check out my Holiday playlist here.

ps. i love youimage Guilty pleasure alert. I have been watching the Hills on demand lately, starting from season1. True to MTV fashion, it has just the right amount of trash to get me through my day, while still being endearing. I am invested in the lives of these girls and I find myself wanting to know what is going to happen next with LC, Whit, Audrina and Heidi. Oh yes, quality television viewing. lol

IDSS Page 1 + A Sneak Peek

So today was Canada day here in Canada (more about that tomorrow i think) and the weather was not so pleasant so i spent the morning picking my courses for the fall (my summer is more than halfway over already – just by the way, wtf?) and I spent the latter half of the day scrapbooking and art journaling. It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon since I couldn’t be outside laying by the pool. What does one’s studio look like after a day of crafting you ask? Well here you go:OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Disastrous. It looks a little better than that now though – so that’s a bonus. (I realize not everyone’s studio looks like this after a day of crafting but lets be honest shall we? it should) (I also realize i used the term studio to describe my scrap table that sits in the corner of my bedroom – i’m ok with it, you should be to). So what on Earth did I make to make such a mess you ask yourself? Well then you are in luck because here are a few of the things I cranked out of the factory today.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I finally got started on Rachel’s summer art journaling class – I Do Solemnly Swear. This is the title page on which I misspelled solemnly. meh. I left it.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA It was really fun to just play around for myself. I haven’t been doing a lot of scrapping lately, but what I have been doing hasn’t just been for myself – they’ve all been projects for other things with deadlines etc. Mind you, its not that these aren’t fun to complete – its just different than when you’re doing something completely for yourself you know? Anyways I had a super fun time making this page.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I also did the second page from the class, but not before good light ran out to take a picture of it. Expect it sometime tomorrow assuming my internet decides to work. We are on a satellite high speed connection here at home and its good when it works – but it seems to be working less and less these days. Suuuper frustrating. What the mother of crap did people do before the internet? because I could not survive without it.

I also got to put some finishing touches on my first project for Such Sweet Tierney this month as well as a few other projects I can’t share right away. London sent me an amazing little packet of buttons this month and I have been playing around with them in the little free time I have. I have put together a couple things and this is my favourite so far – so fun to make. Here is a sneak peek at the layout:OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Check out London’s blog for the big reveal coming either Friday or next Wednesday. We’re all about the suspense over at Such Sweet Tierney – keep you guessing lol.

All this plus I got to enjoy some Canada day festivities including fireworks. I’ll probably blog more about that tomorrow too. But for now I am off to bed for the night.

xoxo Jer

ps. Thank you all so much for the sweet comments lately they really mean so much and make blogging a more rewarding thing to do – because all you bloggers know that blogging is sometimes the last thing you want to do. But seriously while I’m ultimately blogging for myself, your comments make me a better blogger so thank you.

pps. I got the first season of Samantha Who for my birthday and I’ve been watching it over and over. it is hysterical. check it out if you haven’t seen it.

Tuesday’s Thoughts.

1 – I haven’t been stressed about exams so far. I’ve been studying a lot trying to prepare. But tonight the reality of the situation hit me. 4 exams in 4 days starting next Tuesday – and Easter is this weekend so that greatly reduces my study time. I’m a little stressed to say the least.

2 – This little bit of brilliance from the wonderfully talented Kim Smith, has been in my thoughts all week.

“April is for being happy.

just pure happiness.

pure i-don't-care-who-sees-or-knows-about-it happiness.

dance-barefoot-in-sunshine happy.

smile-and-laugh-until-my-cheeks-hurt happy.

don't-get-hung-up-on-things happy.”

[find it here] First I have to make it through the aforementioned exams.

3 – hot water + fresh lemon + honey. so delicious. even more soothing. enough said.

4 – Project Runway Canada is so inspiring. The only problem with being inspired right now is that there is very little I can do with it. boo. However the finale is next week and I seriously can’t wait to see what the final three designers send down the runway. It will probably be the one bit of tv I watch next week amidst exams.

5 – The travel bug is biting. Really really hard.

I have Elsie to thank for that one ;)

6 – I am listening to a ton of Pink right now. It pumps me up and it doesn’t hurt that I *love* her voice.

7 – I said it before that I wanted to start painting again. Now I *really* wanna paint. Its hard to imagine how much I want to paint. I feel like this summer will be a summer where I really get back to my roots which are painting and general “fine arts”. That excites me. As much as I love what I’ve been doing lately such as journaling, scrapping and general crafting, I miss the other things that I started in. Drawing, painting, photography etc. I want to experiment, play and have fun. (I really want to play around with oils) il_430xN.59415812[1] [find it here]il_430xN.63977072[1] i generally don’t like water colours, but i love this. [find it here]

this just blows my mind. it is amazing. [find it here]

8 – Just because I am planning on getting back to my roots doesn’t mean I will not be scrapping or crafting. I still have all of the projects from the Pretty class to make. See the great things my classmates are coming up with here.

9 – Still no paint colour progress. (I’m still really loving the green though)

10 – Ummm. Just by the way. You can watch Jem and the Holograms episodes here. I wasn't around when it was on for real. But I remember watching it in re-runs for a while.

Ok. I am out for the night.

xo.

Ps. I almost forgot. Over 1000 hits on my blog. wow. Thank you so much for every visit and every comment. It really means so much to me to know that what I’m doing isn’t just heading out into cyberspace forever to be lost and read by no one (even though I’d probably be doing it anyways). Seriously though. Thank you, and I try to comment as much as I can on your blogs as well. You know, share the love.
